More Scholarships for Students-Educationist

An educationist, Mrs Gladys Grimes, has called on privileged Nigerians, private organisations and governments to award more scholarships to students to reduce the number of out-of-school children in the country.
She made the call in an interview with newsmen on Wednesday in Lagos, saying
scholarships would give more children access to education.
She explained that many children were out-of-school, while some could not further their education due to the
lack of funds on the part of their parents or guardians.
“I am appealing to privileged Nigerians to make the award of scholarships to indigent students a norm.
“Scholarships should be seen as community service to assist parents with brilliant children through school.
“It has been observed that when such children are denied education, they eventually grow to become miscreants who make the community restive.”
Grimes, who is the proprietress of a private primary school, said education was the most important weapon for child development.
She added that children should not be denied education due to the lack of funds.
“We are ready to sponsor brilliant students to any school of their choice but by an entrance examination which they have to pass.
“We found out that some parents are able to sponsor their children to primary and secondary schools from which they get good results, only to realise they cannot send them further.”
