The Kaduna State Independent Electoral Commission has said it will
deploy electronic voting machine during the local government elections, which
is planned for later in the year.
Chairman of the electoral body, Saratu Audu, who demonstrated how the
machine works before journalists in Kaduna, said it will ensure the integrity
of the electoral process and eliminate the incidence of electoral malpractice.
According to her, 6000 units of the machines will be needed for the
5,101 polling stations in the state, while 25,000 ad hoc staff will be
recruited. She explained that the commission will embark on impassive
sensitisation of the citizenry on how to use the electronic voting machines,
adding that it will be easier to use the electronic machine than the old ballot
paper option. If successful, Kaduna will be the first city in West Africa to
use the electronic voting machine and second, only to Namibia, in the whole of
Africa.
